Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo and his wife, Lucy Muteke, have died in a helicopter crash in Marondera, about 70 kilometres east of Harare, according to Chivayo’s family and Zimbabwean authorities

The helicopter crashed on Wednesday in the Kudenga Farm area. Police said all six people on board died. Two of those on board were pilots. The cause of the crash had not been established, and investigations were under way at the time of reporting.
Family spokesperson Herbert Chivayo confirmed the deaths to Zimbabwe’s state broadcaster, ZBC, describing the family as devastated. Reports said the couple had been travelling from Gandami in Chikomba, where they were building a rural home, when the helicopter came down roughly 40 minutes after take-off.
Chivayo’s business dealings and close relationships with senior political figures attracted considerable scrutiny. Critics questioned how he accumulated his wealth and whether his access to government contracts was connected to political influence.
Chivayo’s public profile extended beyond Zimbabwe. He was photographed with several African leaders, including Kenya’s President William Ruto. Following news of the crash, Ruto described Chivayo as a friend and expressed condolences to the families of those who died.
