Vieolence Spreads During Protests in Franc

France is facing its worst street unrest in years after nationwide protests over the cost of living, rising fuel prices, education and declining public services turned violent in several cities. More than half a million people joined demonstrations on Saturday, 17 October 2026. Most protesters were peaceful, but violent groups clashed with police, looted shops and set fire to buildings.

The violence was reported in Paris, Marseille, Lyon, Limoges, Bordeaux and other cities. In Paris, riot police used tear gas as masked protesters threw objects and damaged shops. In Limoges, a fire severely damaged the historic town hall and caused its clock tower to collapse.

President Emmanuel Macron condemned the looting, arson and attacks on police, but said peaceful protesters had legitimate grievances. He promised that people who destroyed property or looted businesses would be held responsible.
