President William Ruto has officially commissioned and dedicated the mausoleum of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga at Kang’o Ka Jaramogi in Bondo, Siaya County. The ceremony, held on Wednesday, was conducted as Kenya prepares to mark one year since Raila Odinga’s death. It was also part of Mwezi wa Baba, a month dedicated to remembering and honouring the former Prime Minister’s life, political career and contribution to the country.

The mausoleum stands at Kang’o Ka Jaramogi, the family site where Raila will be laid to rest beside his father, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Kenya’s first vice-president. The complex is therefore intended to preserve the history of both father and son, whose careers were closely linked to Kenya’s independence struggle, democratic development and constitutional politics.
Gender, Culture, the Arts and Heritage Cabinet Secretary Hannah Cheptumo described the mausoleum as more than a physical structure. She said it would serve as a repository of memory, history and identity through which future generations could learn about Raila Odinga and the period in which he lived and served.
Raila’s decades in public life included senior government service, opposition leadership and a prominent role in debates on multiparty democracy, constitutional reform and Pan-African politics. His supporters often referred to him as a champion of democracy and a major figure in Kenya’s modern political history.
