Kenya Confirms First Ebola Case

Kenya has confirmed its first recorded case of Ebola after a Kenyan citizen who had been living in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) tested positive after arriving in the country through Uganda, health officials said Tuesday.

The patient was isolated and treated at Nairobi Hospital after developing symptoms associated with hemorrhagic fever. The patient died late Monday while receiving treatment, according to the Associated Press. Health Minister Aden Duale said the case was imported from the DRC, which is currently experiencing a large outbreak of Ebola caused by the Bundibugyo virus.
The announcement marks a significant development for Kenya, which had previously reported no confirmed Ebola cases. It also highlights the risks created by cross-border travel in East and Central Africa, where people regularly move between the DRC, Uganda and Kenya for family, commercial and other reasons.
Kenyan authorities have placed the affected county on high alert and begun monitoring people who may have been exposed. Duale said 28 contacts had been identified so far, including family members and health workers. Authorities are expected to continue tracing the patient’s movements and assessing whether additional people require monitoring or isolation.
The health minister urged the public not to panic, saying that national response systems were in place to limit further transmission. The early identification of contacts, medical observation and strict infection-prevention procedures will be central to Kenya’s response in the coming days.

Kenya had already been preparing for the risk of Ebola importation, including by strengthening surveillance, isolation capacity and training for health workers. The confirmation of a case will now test those preparations and could lead to enhanced screening and monitoring at airports, border crossings and health facilities.
