The decisive Football Kenya Federation Premier League promotion and relegation playoff between Kariobangi Sharks and Mombasa United ended in chaos on Tuesday after a disputed penalty decision triggered a pitch invasion at Ulinzi Sports Complex.

Kariobangi Sharks were leading 2–1 when the second leg was abandoned in the 66th minute. The result left the two-match tie level at 3–3 on aggregate, with the outcome now expected to be determined by the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Disciplinary Committee.
The winner of the playoff was due to secure a place in the FKF Premier League. Kariobangi Sharks were fighting to preserve their top-flight status, while Mombasa United were seeking promotion to the league for the first time in the club’s history.
The turning point came midway through the second half when referee John Sulwe awarded Mombasa United a penalty after a corner kick. The decision followed an alleged shirt-pulling incident inside the Kariobangi Sharks penalty area and was immediately challenged by the Sharks players and technical bench.
The decision provoked anger among home supporters. Fans breached the security cordon and entered the field, making it impossible for the match to continue.
The abandonment leaves both clubs facing uncertainty at the most important stage of their seasons. The FKF Disciplinary Committee is expected to examine the referee’s report, the pitch invasion and the conduct of the players and supporters before deciding whether the match should be awarded, replayed or resolved through another disciplinary measure.
